Don’t Worry. Be HAPPO.

Why is my blog called PReamble? Because it will explain why I am perfect for your company.

I am a senior public relations major/French minor at Rowan University in New Jersey. I have extensive experience both through the Rowan University AJF-PRSSA Chapter where I’ve sat on the executive board for two years, and internship experience in the corporate and agency sectors.

Now, I could go down the line and list all my public relations experience — name dropping, boasting, and detailing — but that’s what a resume is for. I think a good pitch needs a back story. It needs history and a raison d’ être to actually make it newsworthy. That’s where this #HAPPO blog post comes in.

I didn’t come in to college knowing that I wanted to be the next big PR hot shot or that I wanted to one day run my own agency or be the vice president of communications at a Fortune 500 company. What I did know was that I was personable, hard-working, and dynamic. I knew that I was a quick thinker, motivated, and ready to learn what this industry was all about.

I’ve always taken on a task with confidence. I started my wonderful public relations career as a drive-thru attendant at my local McDonald’s. I was fourteen years old for a matter of months when my parents said “No more allowance. It’s time to see what a real job is like.” So I put on my McDonald’s uniform — visor and all — and I walked in there with a smile on my face.

From there I learned that I wasn’t going to like every task that was thrown at me, but that it only made me stronger and helped me gain insight into the business world. After a short six month stint at McDonald’s, I left my honorable position with a 25 cent raise and that same smile on my face.

As graduation approaches and I am about to enter the next stage in my life, I look back now and see how far I’ve come from that little girl smiling handing out Big Macs through the drive thru window.

I believe that my dedication and unyielding drive makes me an ideal candidate for an entry-level job in the Philadelphia, New York, and DC areas. I am knowledgeable and educated, but still an open book eager to fill my brain with unlimited industry insight.

So to my prospective employer, I leave you with this. Erin Phillips is relentlessly driven, fully dedicated to every given task, and always smiling.
